Singapore Zoo
Friday's main event was the Singapore Zoo. However, the past 5 days of not getting a full night's sleep had caught up with me and I had to put my foot down and insist on a lazy morning. I slept in, took my time with breakfast, looked up info on Kuala Lumpur on the internet, and then we packed our bags and headed off. As we were walking along the main road, enjoying the Indian-inspired architecture and temples, we heard a woman screaming in a nearby apartment complex... and then loud banging noises that left no doubt as to what was happening. So sad :(

Our first stop was to the Golden Mile Complex and its many bus companies. We booked our overnight sleeper bus to Kuala Lumpur for that night and got directions to the closest subway station. On our way, we found an open air building full of food stalls... so we decided to make like the locals and get some yummy Asian food for lunch. Beau got a three veggie dish. I tried a sliced beef noodle soup. It was cheap and delicious!
Our next stop was the Singapore Zoo. Many of the animals are the popular ones seen in zoos around the world, but there were also many local species from Singapore, Malaysia and Southeast Asia that I had never seen before. There was greenery everywhere and even some tall rainforest-type trees lining the walking paths that really made you feel like you were in the wilderness. The main attraction at the zoo is the free-range Orangutan area, where the primates are hanging out in the trees and tight ropes directly above your head - with no nets! It was very cool.

We stayed at the zoo until it closed at 6pm and caught a bus back to Little India where we found a highly recommended vegetarian Indian restaurant called Madras New Woodlands - and did it ever live up to its reputation! The server recommended a sampling of about 10 different kinds of thali, including rice. I added onto that my personal favourite veggie dish, Chana Masala. They were both incredibly delicious, and the server kept refilling our bowls if they were getting low, free of charge! Then, when our bellies were stuffed and we could eat no more, they brought us complimentary serrat (sp? pronounced sir-raht), a spiced tea that warmed the belly. All of this for less than 20 Singapore Dollars! Fighting off our inevitable food comas, we headed back to our hostel to grab our bags and then back to the Golden Mile Complex to catch our sleeper bus to Kuala Lumpur. Goodbye Singapore... Hello Malaysia!
